Assembled by Dr. Albert C. Barnes between 1912 and 1951, the Barnes collection is renowned as one of the finest holdings of Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings in the world. The collection also includes important examples of African sculpture, early twentieth-century American painting, Pennsylvania German decorative arts, Native American ceramics, old master paintings, as well as metalwork, jewelry, textiles, and antiquities.

Among its major holdings are: 181 works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (the largest single group of the artist’s paintings); 69 works by Paul Cézanne; important paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and Georges Seurat; 59 works by Henri Matisse; 46 works by Pablo Picasso; 16 works by Amedeo Modigliani; 125 African sculptures, masks and tools.

Not To Be Missed: William Glackens
November 8, 2014–February 2, 2015

A Philadelphia native, Glackens (1870–1938) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. There, and as an artist for the Philadelphia Press, he became friends with Robert Henri, George Luks, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan, the core of the group that later formed “The Eight” in reaction to the National Academy of Design’s hidebound exhibition policies. The group exhibited together only once, in 1908, creating the opening wedge in the struggle to democratize the process by which artists could show and sell their work. Read the rest of this entry »

Each year, the local Affiliate invites supporters, survivors and those in need to join them in a day of celebration. Last year, the event welcomed 16,000 in attendance and raised $1.325 million. Susan G. Komen® Miami/Ft. Lauderdale is dedicated to combating breast cancer at every front. Seventy-five percent of the Affiliate’s net income goes toward funding grants to local hospitals and community organizations that provide breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for uninsured, medically underserved women in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. The remaining twenty-five percent supports the national Komen Grants Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world. Ortanique on the Mile: Cooking with Chef Cindy Hutson

Ortanique on the Mile will be hosting its month cooking class on Saturday, October 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to learn the secrets behind Chef Cindy Hutson’ Cuisine of the Sun. Participants will get a chance to play chef as they learn how to prepare Cindy’s signature dishes: Loaded Baked Potato Bisque with Vande Rose Farms Bacon Lardoons and Cabot Clothbound Cheddar in Russet Cups; Cumin-and Coriander-Dusted Mahi-Mahi with Eggplant and Vine Ripe Tomato Sauté Slivered Garlic and Sambal Pepper Sauce; and Drunken Banana Fritters with Cinnamon Ice Cream. Each course will be complimented with champagne or wine. Guests will also be treated to a sneak peek into Cindy’s first cook book, expected to release in February 2015. The Early Development of Global Education (EDGE) Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, invites the South Florida community to their second annual Casino Night. The Hispanic Police Officers Association of Miami-Dade (HPOA) is the presenting sponsor of “A Night in Casablanca.” The themed event will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m., at The Fairways on the Key – Crandon Park Golf Course. As of today, The EDGE Charitable Foundation has helped more than 20,000 children in the United States, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, Guatemala, India, Madagascar, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico. The organization raises funds to benefit children who are homeless, unaccompanied, and victims of human trafficking, domestic violence or victimized in any other way. The Casino Night’s lounge-style setting promises to become the EDGE Charitable Foundation’s humanitarian event of the year. Miami International Film Festival Presents MIFFecito

Miami International Film Festival (MiamiFF), a program of Miami Dade College’s MDCulture, will be giving Miami an early “taste” of the Festival this year with MIFFecito, a film festival of international films from countries including Bhutan, Cuba, Italy, Mexico, Poland and Spain. The Festival will be taking place over four days (October 16 – 19), and will be held exclusively at the Tower Theater which has undergone renovations including wooden floors and new state-of-the-art screen/projector equipment. Instead, look forward to classics such as Pastelitos, Croquetas de Jamon, Pressed Sandwiches and many more Cuban delights from the masters of Cuban food at Tinta Y Café. For the entire month of October, Mignonette will be lending an oyster shucker to help raise funds for breast cancer research in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  The new Edgewater oyster bar is adding a special oyster to its eclectic menu, coined the “Danny’s Mom” oyster. For this fundraising effort, Mignonette teamed up with American Mussel Harvesters, who agreed to rename their beloved Umami oysters that they ship to Mignonette as “Danny’s Mom” oysters throughout October.    For every “Danny’s Mom” sold, Mignonette will donate $1 to the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center to help fund breast cancer research.

 

Miami Seaquarium Goes Pink for Breast Cancer

Miami Seaquarium will go pink this October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as it welcomes its guests with the opportunity to make a $5 contribution to the Susan G. Komen Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Affiliate and save 50 percent on general admission. The park also will encourage its visitors to get involved in other ways by transforming several park locations with the iconic pink color. The offer starts October 1st and runs until October 31st. The region’s rock-star growers and top-tier chefs will combine their talents for “PHeaSt,” the extraordinary garden-to-table celebration, on Friday, October 17, 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia. The third annual PHeaSt, hosted by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, brings together the region’s renowned chefs and urban growers for a unique party to benefit the PHS City Harvest program. The event has been a sell-out each year, as hundreds of Philly-area foodies come to sample amazing, new seasonal dishes by the culinary and gardening teams. PHeaSt transforms the PHS Warehouse at the Navy Yard, home to recycled props from the Philadelphia Flower Show, into an industrial-chic party setting. Guests are invited to roam from table to table to enjoy the garden-fresh dishes, chat with the chefs, and get gardening tips from the growers.
