Popular contemporary artist Trey Speegle will kick off Art Basel 2011 with a private rooftop party held Thursday, December 1, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Hotel Breakwater’s “Intimissi Lounge” rooftop penthouse overlooking Ocean Drive. The exclusive event, which launches his four-day “You/Me” exhibit at the hotel, will feature live body paint-by-numbers by Trey Speegle, signature “You/Me” cocktails and sounds by DJ Valdemar. Speegle’s diverse career has been characterized by a unique mix of commercial and fine art. His work combines high- and lowbrow with a nod toward Pop Art, overlaying his meticulous vintage paint-by-number images with messages. Last year, Speegle created a backdrop for Stella McCartney’s Paris runway show, as well a collection for Anthroplogie Home. His iconic YOU ARE HERE painting was recently acquired by Microsoft for the lobby of its San Francisco headquarters. On Friday, December 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County will host an art-inspired version of its popular “Food Truck Fridays” lunchtime event in honor of Art Basel Week and the Center’s upcoming programming. Throughout the event, guests will enjoy lunch from a variety of “Burger Beast Approved” gourmet food trucks including gastroPod and Ms. Cheezious as well as a FREE performance on one of Steinway’s Pop-Up Piano Miami’s pianos by ELEW, a dynamic “Rockjazz” pianist who recently toured with Josh Groban, at 1 p.m. In addition, all “Food Truck Fridays” attendees will have the opportunity to pose for Sketchy Miami artists and receive instant, complimentary portraits. “La Collaborazione” – A Unique Artistic Collaboration by Noel & Uberto Gucci

Join local artist Noel and Uberto Gucci’s opening reception for “La Collaborazione” on Thursday, November 17 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Trigger a short film by South Florida native and Los Angeles-based Matt Sinnreich, will make its Miami Beach debut on Wednesday, November 23, at 7:30 p.m. at Colony Theater on Lincoln Road. Notably, one hundred percent of proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida® and Angels of East Africa. Trigger is a 30-minute short film that has been touted as an emotional and psychological rollercoaster about what it takes for one to actually pull “the trigger” and take another human’s life. Immediately captivating the audience, the film opens with a man holding a gun to a drug dealer’s head, and then regresses back through the gunman’s childhood, exposing the circumstances of how he ended up in the position, and ultimately, how fate has brought everything full-circle.  On Thursday, November 17, Village of Merrick Park kicks off the joyous season with its most beloved of events, the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. For the fourth time, Village of Merrick Park is environmentally friendly by lighting its 50-foot tree with 55,000 LED light bulbs. The Master of Ceremonies for this magical evening will be Belkys Nerey, Head News Anchor at FOX WSVN Channel 7. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m., including a musical performance by the Coral Gables High School Choir and a holiday greeting from Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and other character favorites. The artist provocatively forms literal and figurative connections between the past and present and investigates shifting and multiple time frames in his conceptual art practice. The Betsy Hotel, a hub for arts and culture on South Beach, will take part in Sleepless Night; Miami Beach’s all night arts festival, on Saturday November 5, with a series of events that exemplify the hotel and its leadership team’s firmly established commitment to philanthropy, art, music and literature. In cooperation with The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, a state of the art mobile recording studio and video production facility, The Betsy Hotel will host a dedication ceremony for a tree that it has donated to the City of Miami Beach in honor of Yoko Ono’s interactive artwork, Wish Tree. Located in Lummus Park, directly across the street from the hotel at 1440 Ocean Drive; the community is invited to attend the dedication and plaque installation beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Wish Tree has been integral to many of Ono’s exhibitions around the world in museums and cultural centers where people have been invited to write their personal wishes for peace and tie them to a tree branch. The first 100 guests to add their wishes to the tree will have their photograph taken by one of several professional photographers (including Robert Zuckerman) and exhibited on board the Lennon Bus. The Wolfsonian Visionaries will host 11:11:11, the second annual Visionaries’ fundraiser to benefit The Wolfsonian–Florida International University.
