Underwater Wonderment

We knew to expect some special surprises when we received our invitation to the grand opening of the W Hotel, Fort Lauderdale.  Inside the foot-long, shimmering, purple, alligator-skinned envelope was a dark blue cardboard alligator.  Baffled, we stared at the thing for a few seconds before it occurred to us to look at the bottom of the cut out.  The instructions simply stated:  “Hold under warm water.” Hmmmmm, O.K.  Once under water, the alligator turned white, revealing the details of the grand opening extravaganza, leading us to think that this event just might warrant a trip across the Dade/Broward county line. Sure enough, the folks behind the W Hotel Fort Lauderdale, designed to resemble a sailboat (ergo the theme),  The DYL Development Group, interior designer, Clodagh Design, Whiskey Blue’s famed nightlife entrepreneurs Rande and Scott Gerber, 954 Steak’s Stephen Starr, CEO, John Yanopoulos and Eva Ziegler, Global Brand Leader, W Hotels Worldwide, did not disappoint. Upon arrival at the party on Thursday night, VIPs walked on a purple carpet, sprinkled with glitter. The whimsy continued inside as beautiful girls resembling mermaids in long blue-green chiffon dresses entertained guests who were overwhelmed by the expansive hotel.  After exploring the Living Room level as the sun set, partygoers ascended the main staircase up to Wet, the rooftop pool lounge, via a clear glass staircase which was actually built in the middle of the pool, in which beautiful, models in colorful swimsuits designed by local swimwear designer AMAYA, danced underwater with the help of SCUBA gear throughout the entire party. Talk about getting pruny in places you didn’t even know you had!  Once upstairs, Ziegler addressed the crowd, explaining that the opening of the W Fort Lauderdale is the 30^th W Hotel to open worldwide.  This is quite the accomplishment for a company that has only been around for ten years.  Afterwards, the party escalated as bonfires were lit and dance music played throughout the evening.  The alligator, which we previously mentioned made subtle appearances in a sand sculpture and in the signature white chocolate favors.  “Why?” You ask.  It turns out the albino alligator is a mascot of the hotel, which features a stuffed albino alligator in each room. 

Celebrity guests at the W opening included Gossip Girl‘s Blake Lively and beau, Penn Badgley, who spent the evening with the “Damsome,” short for “damn handsome,” (you heard it here first) Rande Gerber and his wife, supermodel, Cindy Crawford; Kin Shriner, who plays Scotty Baldwin on General Hospital, and, as expected, two members of the Kardashian clan: Khloe and Kourtney.  Other notable attendees of the W grand opening included Rene Ruiz, Gigi Ganatra, Ina Lee, Rita and Rick Case, William Palmer, Mario Iglesias, Carlos Becil, Dave Marr, Scott Brooks, Michael Yormark, Angel Medina, Steven Perricone, Patsy Mennuti, Elizabeth Wentworth, Mark and Robin Levinson, and Nikki Grossman.  On Sunday, the W Pool Party attracted many a gorgeous sun worshipper.  Presented by 944 Magazine and sponsored by Grey Goose, Red Bull and Bacardi, the event showcased the sexy styles of Betty Bangs swimwear with a rock n’ roll inspired fashion show.  DJ Marc Vane kept the party going throughout the afternoon.  

Billion Dollar Bucket

The W’s “underwater wonderment” seems like foreshadowing for what’s become known as “The Storm of 2009” which hit South Beach on Friday, flooding, well, just about everything, and turning the streets into a Venice of sorts, minus the historic bridges, buildings, plazas, cafes, places to walk, sit, stand, park, eat or drive and wrecking over 200 cars which could be seen stalled out all over the place.  For those of us who couldn’t build an ark in time, seeking refuge in a fancy storm shelter such as the Fontainebleau seemed like a pretty good idea.  That is until we checked into the hotel to find that it was raining inside, yes, inside the lobby- kind of like an unplanned indoor waterfall, the result of the caved-in roof right above the steps that lead up towards LIV and down towards Blade.  Makes us think they really should have paid those angry contractors.  Hotel employees curtained off the entire lobby which was completely flooded and scurried to escort guests to and from their shelters, (we mean) rooms and explain that all restaurants, clubs and shops were closed due to flooding.  To their credit, the Fontainebleau staff worked diligently around the clock to accommodate their guests and clean up the mess.  They even hosted a complimentary gourmet buffet dinner in a ballroom on Friday night, complete with open bar and live entertainment- we felt like Captain Stubing would be inviting us up to the Lido Deck at any moment.  By Saturday evening, there was nary a trace of any storm disaster, with the exception of the 10X10 hole in the ceiling.  It was business as usual, and the restaurants and nightclubs took extra special care of their guests.  LIV hosted a couple of cool birthday parties, which were attended by locals and celebs that refused to let a little rain dampen, their spirits.

Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian– have been spotted just about everywhere.  Most recently, the girls famous for being famous, were at the Setai promoting clothing lines from their boutique, DASH, (as in Kar-DASH-ian– clever!). On Tuesday, they partied with an entourage, while filming their reality show at Florida Room, over the weekend, Khloe was spotted with Grammy nominee Omarian, (who also attended at B.E.D.’s “Secret Society Monday” party) and on Thursday, the Kardashian sisters were all over the W Hotel’s grand opening. Seriously, who can “keep up?”  Dwyane Wade was at the Delano on Tuesday, talking to some lovely ladies and sporting a customized Polo shirt with his basketball number, 3, embroidered on the sleeve. Sexy actress, Vivica Fox visited the Seminole Casino in Coconut Creek last week to promote her new reality hit, The Cougar. Wilmer Valderrama attended the Aston Martin preview of the new DBS Volante at the Moore Building, alongside Global Director of Design at Aston Martin, Marek Reichman, who spoke about the open-top luxury sports car and demonstrated the limited-edition Jaeger-LeCoultre AMVOX2 Transponder watch, which opens and closes the car-very James Bond, indeed.  Other notable guests included Julian Jenkins, Vice President of Aston Martin North America and accessories designer, Lisa Pliner. Valderrama also partied at LIV all weekend. On Saturday, he celebrated Frankie Delgado’s birthday and on Sunday, he was spotted there again, along with Lil Scrappy, Mario, and Kevin Hart. Hurricane season kicked off this week, bringing with it storms and sweltering weather and putting the kibosh on many an outdoor event.   But even the rain and extreme heat could not keep celebs, athletes and VIPs away from the Eden Roc Hotel on Friday night, where Cindy Taylor and all-pro Redskins football player, Santana Moss, celebrated A Night at the Eden Roc: Reloading Life through the World of Fashion which featured  Frederick’s of Hollywood and Bullets 4 Peace fashion shows.  For a little while, the party seemed a bit “cash bar,” being that guests had to actually pay for their drinks, which were not included in the ticket price, but as temperatures heated up poolside, the event became downright scorching, once the fashion shows began, thanks to models strutting down the floating runway wearing next to nothing.  After the Frederick’s of Hollywood show, actor Steven Bauer addressed the crowd, channeling Sylvester Stallone at the end of Rocky IV, (when he gives the inspirational speech to the Russians- If I can change, and you can change…blah…blah…blah) mumbling about his new show, the Santana Moss foundation and Bullets 4 Peace, we think, as he was virtually unintelligible.  Next came one of the most unusual and visually stunning shows we’ve had the pleasure of watching, as designer Raffi Anteby presented his jewelry collection, Bullets 4 Peace, in which he uses actual bullet casings to create unique works of art.  Instead of the casings being recycled into new bullets, used for destruction, they are artistically revamped with silver and precious stones, promoting “peace” through fashion.  It’s a stretch, but we’ll take it.  What was unusual about the show, which began with shirtless buff boys in combat gear, carrying fake semi-automatic weapons, was that the models were completely naked, except for a tiny g-string, patent leather boots and the jewelry.  Each model’s body was painted to match the unique design of the piece of jewelry she was wearing.  Towards the end of the show, the “soldier boys” made a reappearance, only to be thrown into the pool by the body-painted girls- peace wins! Get it?  Afterward, Anteby presented the adorable Santana Moss with an original piece and the airbrushed models, along with Anteby and Cindy Taylor sang Happy Birthday to Moss, who was celebrating his 30^th.   Guests at the bash included Academy Award-winning actor, Lou Gossett Jr., New York Giant, Sinorice Moss, designer, Donald Pliner and his wife Lisa, designer Lei Marco, Michele Pommier, and the Eden Roc’s David Siguaw.  Proceeds from the event benefitted the Santana Moss Foundation, which brings awareness economically disadvantaged communities in South Florida, and around the country, while working to enrich the lives of children and families in these communities through education, health and sports initiatives.

While showing off items which actually cover the human body, The Webster drew quite the VIP crowd to its grand opening on Monday.  With a caviar café and three floors of stunning clothes and accessories for women and men, the Webster inaugurated its permanent locale with a soiree that was more bash than boutique opening.  It seemed everyone we’ve ever met anywhere (with the exception of those traveling abroad) braved the elements and slippery steps to celebrate and marvel at the pricey designer duds.  The party was only supposed to go until nine, but was still hopping after ten o’clock, due perhaps to the free flowing Grey Goose and the “Webster Cocktails” (a mix of vodka, champagne, and Remy Cointreau violets and pearls), and the fact that it was actually indoors, where temperatures are actually bearable. Summer Steals:

Throughout the month of June, Club 50 at Viceroy Miami will continue hosting Art Viceroy, this summer’s free weekly Tuesday night series which presents local artists in the disciplines of video, performance, sculptural and installation art. Guests are invited to take in the sweeping views of downtown Miami, sip cocktails from Ruinart and mingle as they enjoy the art.  Next Tuesday, June 9, will feature the work of Argentine graphic artist, Karin Garcia, who incorporates characteristic decoupage design combinations to transform tired furnishings into dramatic treasures. On June 16, video artist Venessa Monokian will showcase her work.

For a local healthy and economical option, check out Canyon Ranch Grill’s “Nourish” prix-fixe menu series which will focus on heart health during the month of June but will feature a different health topic each month. The $36 per person menu is a bargain and includes dishes teeming with antioxidants, fiber, Omega-3 fatty acids, and other anti-inflammatory ingredients that are essential for decreasing risk of heart disease.

Another great deal for those of us who are in stone crab withdrawal and seeking another crustacean on which to feast is Smith and Wollensky’s annual Summer Lobster Special, which runs through Labor Day, and includes a slew of menu items prepared with fresh Maine lobster, including an amazing offering of a 2.5 pounder for only $39.  The menu kind of reads like a scene out of the movie Forrest Gump, lobster salad, lobster Mac & Cheese, lobster soup, lobster mashed potatoes…

Brooke Shields was seen shopping at the Inca boutique at the Gansevoort South last week.  Matt Damon partied at LIV on Saturday night.  Latin singer, Paulina Rubio shot a cover for Glamour Latin America at Icon Brickell and dined at Donatella Arpaia and Chef Michael Psilakis’ Eos restaurant at the Viceroy with a group of ten, including her mother, Mexican actress, Susana Dosamantes.  Rubio looked stunning in her red gown at the Heart Deco Ball at the Eden Roc on Saturday night.

Summer is officially here, time to bring out the white sandals, up the ante on the anti-frizz products, increase the SPF and put away all your black clothing in exchange for some cooler, brighter duds.  While summer typically signifies a time to unwind, take-off and recover from the many wild antics of the non-stop social season, this summer is throwing us a bit of a curve, in that there are still restaurant, club and store openings and fabulous events to attend, making it seem that like our year-round summer weather, the social season is, well, endless.  For those of us lucky enough to live in the city where most people vacation, there are also a few summer steals of which to take advantage.

Band from TV Makes a Splash at Shore Club

Big on enthusiasm and actual musical talent, The Band from TV, comprised of Greg Grunberg, Adrian Pasdar, Teri Hatcher, James Denton, Bob Guiney and Jesse Spencer along with Louise Griffiths (model/actress) rocked the Shore Club Saturday night with their garage band antics, and to quote Paula Abdul from American Idol, “really had fun up there and made the songs their own.” The Band’s energy was evidently contagious, as the packed crowd jumped, sang, danced and shouted requests. Audience favorites included: The Who’s Teenage Wasteland, Kid Rock’s All Summer Long, Elvis Presley’s Viva Las Vegas, and Bruce Springsteen’s version of Presley’s Pink Cadillac, The Charlie Daniels Band’s The Devil Went down to Georgia and to end, Twist It (Shake Your Tail feather) from the Blues Brothers. Teri Hatcher, who sang her heart out and was joined by her daughter onstage, was hot, literally, ending her performance with a dive into the pool. Other band mates followed her lead, ending the concert with a splash. All proceeds from the evening went to the band members’ favorite charities.

Tea, Trump and Crumpets

On Sunday, the PlayGround Theater hosted a whimsical afternoon at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach. Lucky guests of all ages were greeted by fairytale characters from Inanna and the Huluppu Tree as they approached the ballroom, which was transformed into a scene out of a child’s story book by event planner extraordinaire, Barton G. The charismatic, Belkys Nerey served as Mistress of Ceremonies throughout the tea, which included an auction, children’s fashion show, raffle, jewelry making and a photo booth. A flawless Ivanka Trump served as honorary chairperson of the theater’s fifth anniversary celebration during which she showcased her eponymous jewelry collection, with fifteen percent of sales proceeds going towards the theater. More like “Trump change” than “chump change,” being that our favorite cuff goes for $180,000!

Meat me in New York

8 oz. Burger Bar, rapidly becoming an addictive South Beach staple, (responsible for many a late-night, post-indulgence, walk of shame), was featured on NBC’s Today Show on Monday. Michael Blum did a cooking demonstration along with NBC host and expert griller, Al

As Barry Manilow proclaimed in his timeless disco hit, Copacabana, music and passion are always in fashion- especially on South Beach.  If you’ve been reading the headlines this week, there have been lots of controversial reports about unbridled passion, Thorn Birds style, but this is not that kind of column, (o.k., sometimes it is) so instead, we will focus on those with a passion for music, who truly got their fill this week, thanks to terrific concerts and music bashes courtesy of Wyclef Jean, Katy Perry, Blake Lewis, Crazy Pianos and the New World Symphony, and whose cups shall runneth over this weekend, as the Band from T.V. takes over the Shore Club this Saturday. 

 T-Mobile pulled out all the stops by sponsoring the Grammy Celebration Concert last Thursday night at the Fillmore starring Wyclef Jean and Kerry Perry, during which lucky guests enjoyed open bars, hors d’ oeuvres, give-a-ways, a photo booth and a night of incredible performances. Prior to the concert, American Idol finalist, Blake Lewis, got the party going by spinning great music and beat boxing for the excited crowd.  Wyclef Jean took to the stage and performed a knock-out concert of over ten songs.  Jean demonstrated his musical diversity, singing everything from No, Woman, No Cry, to Staying Alive to Carnaval and even doing a rap version of Guantanamera before lunging into the audience.  His show also included a song he wrote about President Obama and a tribute to Celia Cruz, during which he shouted, “If you love Celia Cruz raise your phones up.”   There’s a new one! At one point, Jean played the electric guitar with his tongue, leaving the women in the audience thinking, “If he’s that good on the guitar, imagine what he can do on the ‘organ’.”  Jean garnered respect from the whole crowd, who screamed and sang along throughout his hour and a half long concert. There was a lull between performances, thanks to Katy Perry, the Betty-Boop-faced songstress with an affinity for cherry chapstick, who kept the crowd waiting for two hours due to “back pain.”  Once Perry finally arrived, she apologized and performed crowd favorites, Waking up in Vegas, Hot and Cold, One of the Boys and, of course, I Kissed a Girl, during which she picked up a gigantic inflatable red lipstick and flung it around on stage.

 On the same night, designer label, Diesel, fueled a great party at the Moore Building for the launch of its new fragrance, Only the Brave. On hand for the festivities, which featured three floors of music and art work:  NBA All-star, Tim Hardaway, supermodel/celebrity DJ, Eve Salvail, Diesel CEO Steve Birkhold, designer, Monica Esposito, and 500 local socialites including, Matt Heien, Sale Stojanovoc, Erin Newberg, and Augie Lasseter, to name a few.  According to Heien, “It truly was ‘only for the brave’ – In order to get a drink you had to order while standing underneath hundreds of razor sharp scissors hanging over your head!”

On Wednesday night, Crazy Pianos, Coconut Grove’s new dueling piano bar and restaurant, debuted in the former Café Tu Tu Tango space in Cocowalk.  While similar in concept to the old Grove haunt, Howl at the Moon, Crazy Pianos is larger and classier and actually serves delicious food.  Last week’s grand opening marked the Netherlands-based company’s first venue in the United States, during which piano masters, Stevie B and Orin Sands tickled the ivories at two, cherry-red baby grand pianos until 3:00 a.m. Crazy Pianos owners invested more than $5 million into the place, including half a million dollars for the sound system alone. Friends of the New World Symphony, hosted a two-hour music festival on Saturday evening, entitled Symphony and Mystery, which featured performances by NWS fellows showcasing the works of Sam Hyken as well as a set by The Mysterytones, a seven-piece funk, rhythm and blues band, alongside DJ, JJ Neil.

As previously mentioned, another awesome music bash takes place this Saturday night, May 16, at the Shore Club, as the Band From T.V., comprised of you guessed it, T.V. stars, including Desperate Housewives’ on-again-off-again adorable couple, James Denton and Teri Hatcher; Heroes’ stars, Adrian Pasdar and Greg Grunberg, The Bachelor and TLC’s Date My House’s, Bob Guiney, The Office’s, Melora Hardin, and House’s Jesse Spencer take to the stage for the first time ever, for the Concert for Charity, to benefit the following charities: Epilepsy Foundation, Miami Children’s Hospital, Art of Elysium, Conservation Fund, Indian University-Kenya Partnership, Rush Medical Center-Pediatric Epilepsy Unit, and Make-A-Wish Foundation.  The Band from T.V. has become an international sensation, with a #1 hit CD/DVD on Amazon.com.  The event starts at 7:30 with a VIP reception with the band and the concert begins at 9:00 p.m.  General admission tickets have been reduced to $50.00 and VIP tickets are selling fast for $175.00. Mad About Tea

Even if your idea of tea is named after Long Island and involves six different liquors and you have no idea what a crumpet is, (neither do we) make some time on Sunday, May 17, for the PlayGround Theatre’s Tea at the Ritz with “celebu-mogul,” Ivanka Trump, who is this year’s honorary chair.  WSVN-7’s anchor, Belkys Nerey, will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies and Barton G. will produce the party, which includes a children’s fashion show, performances and lots of fun activities for the whole family. The festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. at the South Beach Ritz Carlton Hotel.

It appears that the New Kids on the Block, NKB, (yes, the 80s boy band- who insist on still calling themselves “kids” despite being in their 40s) will host NKB fav, Danny Wood’s birthday celebration at LIV on May 14.  While originally we thought the band should be called, New Kids on the Schlock, we’ve got to give the “boys” props, since proceeds from the event go to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

On Friday, American film director, Spike Lee, was spotted dining at Area 31.  At Saturday night’s Miami Beach Chamber Gala, celebrities included George Hamilton, who served as Master of Ceremonies and Elle McPherson, who accompanied honoree, Jeff Soffer.  Alonzo and Tracy Mourning were also honored.  Dennis Rodman and his posse dined and reportedly dashed at Phillipe Chow at the Gansevoort over the weekend, Rodman will celebrate his birthday on Saturday at Pangea at the Hard Rock.  Matt Damon, his wife, Lucia and daughters enjoyed Mother’s Day brunch at Smith and Wollensky on Sunday afternoon. Emilio Estefan power- lunched at Abokado in Mary Brickell Village on Monday.

Sofia Vergara made a pit stop at the Adrienne Arsht center on Monday to promote the upcoming Miami engagement of the Tony award-winning Broadway smash-hit musical, Chicago, in which she will “razzle dazzle” audiences from May 26-31. The sultry Colombian model/actress/TV personality, who has graced over 100 magazine covers, and was once tied to controversial South Beach club impresario, Chris Paciello, will play the role of Mama Morton in the musical, (Queen Latifah’s role in the movie). Yes, you read correctly. Being that Vergara, dubbed “Sofia Viagra” is a dead ringer for Catherine Zeta Jones, we think she should have been cast as the lead, but the producers thought otherwise. About the role, Vergara mused that she had to bring a Latin side to Mama Morton, being that she “cannot escape her Spanish accent.” Vergara graciously posed for photographs and gave multiple interviews, during which she discussed her involvement with the musical, explaining that she had always wanted to be on stage, acting and singing and that instead of starting small, she thought, “Broadway, why not? What’s the worst that could happen? They think I’m terrible?” It was her 17 year old son, Manolo, who urged her to audition and who was the first, of many men, to give her flowers on opening night. When asked her advice for Miami women, Vergara joked, “Get lots of plastic surgery,” but then added, “Drink lots of water and moisturize.” In just about every interview, Vergara explained how much she loves being in Miami and that she feels right at home here.
