Nick D’Annunzio and Brian Antoni’s “Totally 80s” birthday bash at Viceroy’s Club 50 last Friday night was, simply put, the most fun party we’ve been to all summer, maybe all year. We could even exaggerate a bit and say it was the biggest blast we’ve had in almost two decades. Perhaps it was the 80s theme, reminiscent of a time when life was less complicated, before flat-irons and Facebook, Blackberries and Botox, texting and Twitter. A time when the humidity made for a “good” hair day, being that “big hair” was in, every song on the radio or cassette was totally awesome, the ideal outfit consisted of pretty much anything you could find and throw together, people actually danced at parties and even talked to each other on occasion, and South Beach was a quiet, retirement community. Or maybe we were just a bit (quite a bit) younger. The party’s success could also be due to the fact that business and life partners, Nick D’Annunzio and Queen of the Night, Tara Solomon, Principal of Tara, Ink., know a thing or two about throwing a party. The guest list consisted of over 1,000 of Miami’s most influential VIPs, socialites and hipsters, many of whom dressed for the occasion, just adding to the hilarity and excitement, who danced all night- on the floor, on the tables, on the couches…well you get the idea, to excellent music by master DJs, Sean Drake and Johnny the Boy. Solomon, who barely stopped dancing for a second, commented: Read the rest of this entry »

Hot Fun in the Summer-time
Apple Restaurant and Lounge finally opened last week, after much ado about rain delays, permits, yada, yada, yada… The highly-anticipated LA eatery held a small
soiree last Wednesday evening for special guests including: principal, Steve Marlton, Shai Ben Ami, Corina Biton, Jason Clarke, Dr. Julio F. Gallo, Carmel Dubuque, Ricky Elias, Andrea Greenberg, Ashlee Harrison, Yannick and Hadley Henriette, Jillian Jacobson Altit, Edie Laquer, David Lebatard (LEBO), Nicole Lozano, Leslie Wolfson and Dr. Sanford Ziff who had the opportunity to sample a few of the restaurant’s offerings, prepared by chef, Bryan Ogden, son of James Beard Award winning chef, Bradley Ogden. The selections were passed by servers clad in uniforms designed by heiress-turned-fashion designer, Nicky Hilton. Apple, which is open every night but Sunday, is a restaurant from Tuesday-Saturday from 7:00 p.m.-midnight and then becomes a lounge until 5:00 a.m., (Mondays it is only a lounge) has taken over the former Snatch space, which was previously the home of Liquid Lounge (if those walls could talk!). This latest incarnation is more subdued and elegant, with oak-lined walls and astro-turf on the ceiling (we didn’t get that either). Gone are the stripper poles, deer-horned chandelier gilded with bras and our favorite, the mechanic bull that comprised Snatch’s decor. Nothing like watching a drunk, half-naked girl get flung across a bar by a mechanical bull! Ah, but we digress…We suspect that Apple will probably eventually become more lounge than restaurant, so there should still be plenty of bull to go around.
Also on Wednesday, Salon Vaso, the only Miami salon to receive the “A Cut Above” honor in the August issue of Allure Magazine, celebrated with a seaside cocktail aboard the Carrousel Yacht. Over 200 guests were treated to signature hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. VIP attendees included New World Symphony Friends Director, Stacey Glassman, Allure Magazine journalist, Brooke Siegel, NBC 6 meteorologist, Trina Robinson, handbag designer, Dr. Amy Brecka, Get Ink PR principal, Ellen Marchman and Carrousel Yacht owners, Leslie and Ian Kaplan.
On Thursday night, LIV was the scene for one of the hottest parties of the summer,
second only to Nick D’Annunzio’s ‘80s birthday bash, (which we are still buzzing about!), in celebration of 944 magazine’s Nightlife issue. The consensus among party guests was that they haven’t had that much fun in a club in quite some time (dreaded summer months!). The party was a live celebration of music from the 70s, 80s, 90s and today (not to sound like a radio station commercial). Reggeaton megastar, Pitbull, came on first and sang all of his current hits including “Culo,” “Ay Chico-Lengua Afuera” and his newest song “I Know You Want Me.” Pitbull surprised the already excited crowd when he brought out guest performer, Lil’ Jon. Representing the 70s was Anita Ward, who sang her timeless hit “Ring My Bell.” 90s dance music diva, Crystal Waters, kept the energy going when she sang chart-topping dance floor anthems such as “Gypsy Woman” (La da di dow dow…she’s homeless-you’re singing it now, aren’t you?),” “100% Pure Love” and her most recent smash “Destination Unknown!” When asked about the party, 944’s editor, Hadley Henriette, said, “Pitbull’s performance was really off the hook. I didn’t expect him to show up with a five piece band and all. Everybody was up on the tables during Calle Ocho. Anita Ward belted out Ring My Bell. What can I say? She’s still got it! It was 2:30 in the morning by the time Crystal Waters got busy with two back-up dancers. The crowd went nuts and Crystal sounded just like it was 1993. LIV is usually closed on Thursdays, but we brought in a great crowd. Everyone who was there really felt like they were part of something special: to see all these great performers…or maybe it was the Hornitos.” Hornitos and Presidente provided the cocktails for the party, which was well attended by many of the folks featured in the Nightlife issue, including: Jimmy Vargas, Erin Newberg, Buster Cox and Barbara Basti. Also in attendance were musicians, Doug E. Fresh; Dorks, Morons, and Geeks; Black Dada and T-Pain; Joseph Soracchi from The First 48 Hours; Mario Mosely from Dance your Ass Off, and Maria Lankina from Miami Social.
Prior to the 944 extravaganza, RA Sushi in South Miami celebrated its one year anniversary with a “Mad Hatter’s Sake-Tea-Ni Party,” which raised over $800 for The Wellness Community – Greater Miami.
The fun continued throughout the weekend. On Friday, The Fifth hosted the latest performance to support the GREY GOOSE® Entertainment presents “Rising Icons” series. R&B diva, Keri Hilson, performed an entire set to a packed crowd. Dennis Rodman, Cindy Taylor and David Lee Roth (strange bedfellows indeed) helped to celebrate Bullets 4 Peace designer, Rafi Anteby’s birthday at the Eden Roc hotel on Saturday night with a poolside fashion show featuring painted models walking the runway. Sunday night at LIV was quite a scene. Singer/producer, Ryan Leslie, took the stage, delighting fans including Michael Jordan, Matt Damon, his wife Lucy, and Wilmer Valderrama.

A party to promote a party, what a novel idea! Grey Goose Vodka will be serving up free cocktails during the launch party and MOCA insiders ensure a good showing of their “hip artsy members.” The Mystery Dates Party will include glamorous dinner parties at the private homes of some of Miami’s most intriguing art collectors and designers. The ‘mystery’ of which dinner each guest will attend will be revealed immediately preceding the dinner, at a cocktail party at Museo Vault. They Don’t Call ‘em Dog Days for Nothing

As summer drags on and kids prepare to go off to school next week, locals strive to find creative ways to entertain themselves amidst the mugginess, summer storms and a sluggish social calendar. The good news is that although celeb sightings are scarce this time of year, fun times can still be had at hotels such as W South Beach, various wine dinners, cool restaurants offering terrific deals and events such as RA Sushi’s Anniversary Party and the Brickell Art Crawl.
W South Beach has served as a ground zero of sorts for socialites and A-listers over the past couple of weeks. Gigi Levangie Grazer recently hosted a party for the Miami launch of her fourth book, Queen Takes King, alongside tastemakers including Alejandra and Tico Torres, Lisa Pliner, Eva Chow, Fernanda Dormit, Francesca Leoni, Frederic Dechnik, Hernan Arriaga, Karim Masri, Laure Hériard Dubreuil, Leslie Wolfson, Paul Bacardi, Richard David Story, Rita Schrager, Sam Robin, Sarah and Jason Callender, Sarah Harrelson, Suzy Buckley, Valeria and Ugo Campello, and Nicola Siervo, who celebrated his birthday last Saturday at W South Beach with a dinner at Solea and a party at Wall. In honor of the title of her sexy new novel, the striking Grazer was dressed like a queen. All of the servers wore silver tiaras as they passed the party food and cocktails on wooden chess boards, instead of trays. Grazer’s guests were treated to GREY GOOSE La Poire Peartinis, Caipiroskas and hors d’ oeuvres from Soleà, while Grazer mingled and signed copies of Queen Takes King.
The following day, luxury, fashion, lifestyle “expert” and author, Lara Shriftman, co-founder of PR firm, Harrison & Shriftman held a Day of Beauty for forty five of her closest friends at, you guessed it, the W South Beach. The lucky ladies were treated to a day of beauty, shopping, gifting, and relaxation, oh and let’s not forget the delicious lunch and cocktails. Guests also received astrology readings by Barbie Leyva and makeovers. When asked about the party, Shriftman, with baby Lucas on her hip, explained, “All of these activities and treatments created an ambiance of feminine worldliness, allowing all the guests to feel relaxed and effortlessly beautiful.” Upon leaving the party, each guest received a suitcase (yes, you read correctly) of fabulous gifts, including products, clothing, and gift certificates! Friendship definitely has its privileges.

Badrutt’s is the Place to be for the Brickell Art Crawl
Badrutt’s Place, the European gem in the heart of Brickell, will be the focal point during the Brickell Art Crawl, this Friday, August 21, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The Crawl is part of the highly- anticipated celebration of the recently completed Heineken Miami Mural, designed by Kiki Valdez. Four other restaurants including Segafredo, Novecento, Piola and Dolores Lolita, will participate in the crawl, with Badrutt’s Place at the center being that it is located exactly at the halfway point. While at Badrutt’s, make sure to take advantage of the weekly happy hour and enjoy 2-for-1 cocktails, wine, and a beer along with a specially designed bar menu created by internationally renowned mixologist and chef Mario Da Como. We highly recommend staying for dinner and sampling Da Como’s delicious creations and charming “table-side” manner. Some of our favorites include: tiradito, shrimp, risotto, crab cakes, cheeseburger bites, albondiga ‘Jeremy style’ tomato dip and pepper crusted beef medallions with horseradish sauce. To get more of a sophisticated dining experience make sure to get to Badrutt’s by 8:00 p.m. At around 11:00 p.m., the party bus arrives and the entire vibe changes, as the DJ and party people take over.

Celebrity Sightings
Mos Def brought down the house during his performance at the Arsth Center over the weekend. Miami-Dade County Mayor, Carlos Alvarez, walked down the aisle at Mansion’s celebrated dinner theatre show, Tony N’ Tina’s Wedding, on Saturday night with his entire family. The Mayor feasted on an Italian spaghetti dinner and wedding cake, and partook in the interactive show, dancing in the conga line with 200 other “wedding crashers” to the tune of “HOT HOT HOT.” Last week, retired football player Warren Sapp keep things “kosher” at Rare kosher steak house with two guests.
Kayne West and John Legend shot their new music video at LIV Sunday night. West’s girlfriend, Amber, danced the whole time cheering on her boyfriend, while the crowd went nuts. Last Sunday, Ludacris and Manezane of The Runners partied at LIV’s Imagine Sundays. Rapper, Pitbull, received a Key to the City on Wednesday. Pitbull will perform along with Crystal Waters, Doug E. Fresh and Anita “You Can Ring My Bell” Ward for 944’s Nightlife Issue Celebration at LIV this Thursday.
Primal Dwellings
Oh Yeah!
Entourage aficionados got their fix last Thursday night, as HBO and W South Beach unveiled the luxurious Entourage Bungalow in the hotel’s poolside garden. Miami’s finest became Hollywood insiders for the night, hanging with cast members, Adrian Grenier, a.k.a. Vinny Chase, Perrey Reeves, “Mrs. Ari” and our favorite, Rex Lee, better known as Lloyd!!!! The three-story bungalow reflects the characters’ extravagant Hollywood lifestyle, featuring Vince’s movie posters splattered all over the walls, a rooftop lap pool and BBQ, a regulation size stainless steel, mirror-polished ping-pong table, plasmas, PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) and PSP® systems, along with the hottest games. The Bungalow’s indoor mural reminiscent of the iconic oversized tropical leaf wallpaper featured at the Beverly Hills Hotel just adds to the Hollywood vibe. Our favorite kitschy set-up, which coincided with that of Rex Lee, was the director’s chair and movie camera pointed at the bed, surrounded by empty champagne bottles in the master bedroom. However, due to the sweltering temperatures, made hotter by the torches and grilling, the phrase, “It’s way too hot for an orgy” resounded throughout the evening.
To party like a cable star (who plays a movie star), the aptly named Entourage Experience, available from July 27 through September 27, 2009, will set you back about ten grand. A bargain, when you consider that it includes a personal driver, an afternoon of boating along the coast, a personal poolside cabana and jet skis, dinner for four at Soleà followed by table service at WALL and in-bungalow goodies from GREY GOOSE® Vodka and Heineken.
Jungle Love
Another wild gathering took place earlier in the day, as Jungle Island inaugurated a new home for their adorable 5-year old orangutans, Peanut and Pumpkin. The new digs were designed and built by Suffolk construction. VIPs, press and children from the Boys and Girls’ Home of Greater Miami joined in the celebration, enjoying an ice cream party and delighting in watching Peanut and Pumpkin, wearing construction hats, break-in their new home to the tune of Hey, Hey we’re the Monkeys and Celebrate. One of the day’s many highlights was watching the orangutans eat Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream- plain old bananas are sure to be a “tough sell” from now on! The folks from Suffolk were given original works of art created by Peanut and Pumpkin (yes, the monkeys can paint!) as a “thank you” for their diligence in finishing the project despite the tough economic climate and unfavorable weather conditions.
The Webster Makes Space for L*Space
On, Thursday, July 16, Mercedes Benz hosted a swank luncheon at Caviar Kaspia at the Webster boutique to celebrate the launch of the Mercedes Benz 2010 E-Class Coupe and Sedan. A-list guests experienced the best of several worlds: a private introduction to the new 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Sedan led by M. Bart Herring, Mercedes-Benz USA Product Manager; a sneak preview of L*Space for Omni Peace, Monica Wise’s capsule swimwear collection which benefits OmniPeace- an organization aimed at “ending extreme poverty in Africa by 2025; and a special E-Class inspired lunch at Caviar Kaspia, the first stateside locale of the famed Parisian landmark restaurant. After lunch, guests had the opportunity to test drive the E-Class. On-hand for the festivities: founding partners of the Webster boutique, Laure Heriard Dubreuil and Frederic Dechnik; Mercedes Benz PR execs, Adam Paige and Greg O’Shea; L* Space designer, Monica Wise, and OmniPeace founder, Mary Fanaro.

The real fun starts at 8:00 p.m., as Liset Alea and the Sexy Trio perform live. We had the pleasure of enjoying their performances a few weeks back, and were delighted by the band’s unique style, which combines punk rock, new wave, Bossa Nova, jazz and 60s pop for a unique and sultry sound.

Birthday Love to Leos:
Happy Birthday to the sign invented just for party people. This month we celebrate those who share the zodiac with Madonna: Nick D’Annunzio, Erin Newberg, Merle and Danny Weiss, and Stacy Milon. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t step back and wish a belated to some very cool Cancers: Tara Solomon and Jilian Sanz.
Celebrity Sightings:
Robin Quivers, Howard Stern’s co-host had lunch at Wet at the W South Beach, last weekend. Right next door, Lil Kim was holed up at the Gansevoort South. Kim had celebrated her birthday with a blow out at Mansion on Thursday night. Dwyane Wade shacked up at the W Fort Lauderdale over the weekend, maintaining a low profile. Pharell Williams held court at Flipside Friday at LIV. Dancing on the banquettes all night to the sounds of New Yorks’ DJ Chachi. Burn Notice star Jeffrey Donovan was spotted at Clarke’s and at Shiso.
Rapper Lil Jon partied at Tommy Pooch and Alan Roth’s Shore Thing Sundays party at The Shore Club. Little Kim held a birthday bash at Mansion on Thursday night and holed up at the Gansevoort all weekend. Our source from Aspen, Erin Newberg, (“Aspencita”) reports that Jeff Soffer and Elle McPherson were seen shopping at the farmers market on Sunday and having breakfast at Popycocks on Wednesday. Usher, in town to record with Fat Joe and producer Rico Love, tore up Mansion’s hot new Rewind Tuesday party to watch old school legend Special Ed perform his hit I Got It Made. A casually dressed, Usher ordered three bottles of Moet Rose for his table and danced until 4:00 a.m.
Lounging Around
As usual, the Mercedes Benz Star lounge in the Raleigh’s seventh floor Esther Williams’ suite was the place to see and be seen, and take in much needed A/C and refreshments in between shows. At the lounge, we had the opportunity to talk to Sex and the City film hunk and part-time Miami Beach resident Gilles Marini, (made famous by his steamy outdoor shower scenes that got Samantha all in a twist in the movie) whom we barely recognized with clothes on. The charming Marini, a spokesman for Mercedes-Benz, and Dancing with the Stars runner-up, is scheduled to appear in the upcoming seasons of Brothers and Sisters and Nip Tuck. He said he loves Miami and was enjoying the shows with his wife, Carole and two gorgeous children.
The Shay Todd show, held poolside at Wet at the W Hotel was delayed by a brief downpour with gusty winds that toppled part of the stage and an alarm that brought out the Fire Marshall. Despite the setback, the folks at Tara, Ink., including partner, Nick D’Annunzio, who helped rebuild the stage on the pool, kept the crowd happy and put on a great show. We couldn’t help but wonder, “Why all the fuss over a little rain?” After all, the place is named WET! Celebrities who braved the rain delay included actress, Tara Reid and German boyfriend Michael Axtmann; The Howard Stern Show co-host, Robin Quivers; BRAVO TV’s The Real Housewives of New York, Kelly Bensimon; The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Dina Manzo, and BRAVO TV’s Miami Social, Maria Lankina. After the show, Shay Todd held the after party for her show at the Wall at the W, which opened officially to the public on Saturday night.
As expected, de rigueur after parties took place all over South Beach, including the Raleigh penthouse, WALL at W South Beach, Le Cote at Fontainebleau and Louis at the Gansevoort South.

Love The Swim You’re In!
Skin!
For the fifth year in a row, the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim extravaganza splashed into town for five fun-filled, albeit exhausting, days of skin, swim and soirees. The year’s Fashion Week Swim saw the greatest number of designers ever, including, Tibi, ANK by Mirla Sabino, True Religion Swimwear, Ed Hardy Swimwear, Poko Pano, Xtra Life LYCRA®, Cia.Marítima, Luli Fama, L*Space by Monica Wise, (this season’s Mercedes-Benz Presents designer), Tibi, Caffé Swimwear, Marysia Swim, Crystal Jin, ANK by Mirla Sabino, True Religion Swimwear, Red Carter, Aqua di Lara, Tori Praver Swimwear, Mara Hoffman, Ed Hardy Swimwear, White Sands Australia, Poko Pano, Xtra Life LYCRA®, Vitamin A, Cia.Marítima, Luli Fama and V Del Sol. Overall, the shows were a throwback to the 80s, with models sporting bizarre hairstyles, funky make-up, outlandish accessories, and of course, the requisite Michael Jackson (R.I.P.) songs on the soundtrack.
The Suits
Many of the designers showcased retro-suits, featuring belts, knots, buckles, studs and hardware. Other common themes were bright colors and oversized, exaggerated accessories. Standouts included Miami-based swimwear designer Red Carter’s eponymous line and Christian Audigier’s Ed Hardy show.
Red Carter told The Daily that his inspiration for this year’s “Rock and Roll Space Hookers Circa 1984” came from his father’s Playboy magazine collection.
Carter’s show, which was rumored to be overbooked by 400, did not disappoint. Lots of eccentric looks graced the runway, including black-pink-and-gray animal prints, suits with studs, cutouts and splicing, thunder bolts and wide metallic belts on futuristic-looking models wearing black lipstick and funky hairstyles.
Similar to last year, this year’s Ed Hardy show was part rock concert, part frat party, and featured his trademark colorful, tattoo-inspired suits, complete with the signature skull and crossbones, unique embellishments and custom hardware. Bright colors, sequins, and studs covered the suits that barely covered the models, who, in Mohawk-style hairdos and Joan Jett inspired make-up strutted down the runway in matching Ed Hardy patent leather pumps to the beat of Boom Boom Pow and M.J.’s Dirty Diana. The retro 80s vibe filled the room as the models revved up the crowd by waving their arms in the air and swinging huge silk scarves to garner applause. Everyone seemed to be having a blast, enjoying Audigier’s unique, audacious designs.
