Dance at BougivalThe Philadelphia Museum of Art presents Discovering the Impressionists: Paul Durand-Ruel and the New Painting from June 24 through September 13.“If you see only one exhibition this year—make it this one” — Daily Telegraph (London)

Tickets for the acclaimed exhibition Discovering the Impressionists: Paul Durand-Ruel and the New Painting, which is making its only U.S. stop in Philadelphia this summer, are currently on sale.  One hour each day will be reserved exclusively for members (Tuesday through Sunday 10:00–11:00 a.m.) through July 31.

The ground-breaking exhibition examines the early struggles and ultimate triumph of the artists who created the style known as Impressionism and the role that the great Parisian art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel played in their success. Discovering the Impressionists: Paul Durand-Ruel and the New Painting will include masterpieces by Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, and Mary Cassatt. It will reunite for the first time key paintings that were shown in the earliest exhibitions devoted to the work of these artists. Many of these were organized by Durand-Ruel, the artists’ early champion. He worked tirelessly over the course of nearly a half century to create a robust market for Impressionism in France, Germany, England, and the United States, from the critical moment in the 1870s when the paintings of these artists were greeted with ridicule to the early 20th century when their artistic genius was fully recognized.

The exhibition opened first in Paris to wide acclaim before traveling to London in March. London’s Daily Telegraph called it “the most significant Impressionist exhibition we’ve seen in this country in two decades. If you see only one exhibition this year, make it this one.” The Guardian wrote, “The art is sensationally beautiful…. Every room unleashes a surprise.”

In Philadelphia, tickets will be issued based on availability and include a complimentary exhibition audio tour and general admission to all Museum locations for two consecutive days. Service charges apply to online and phone orders.
