Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2014 took over Lincoln Center for seven days of runway shows and presentations.  Dozens of top names in fashion presented a variety of looks that, despite having been created for “spring” would be considered “year-round” fashion in sunny Miami.  As expected, resort wear ruled the runways- floral and artsy prints, pastels and patterns prevailed, as did sleek, structured pieces. Most designers celebrated the bare midriff, showcasing at least a few, if not several, crop tops. Black and white and monochromatic looks dominated Jill Stuart, Ralph Lauren, Cynthia Rowley, Rag & Bone, Victoria Beckham, and Altuzarra’s shows, to name a few.  

The shows were presented with fun and flair this season.  Diane von Furstenberg’s show seemed like an all-out 1970s-inspired dance party; Cynthia Rowley presented in a 19th century Gothic landmark, adorned with colorful, whimsical decorations; Prabal Gurung filled the room with the scent of roses for his show and Opening Ceremony took over the Super Pier to showcase clothes from models in luxury cars.  Here’s a rundown of some of our favorite shows this season. Much to the delight or dismay of the fashion set, New York Fashion Week has become as much about the parties as about the looks on the runways.  This season saw no shortage of over-the-top, celeb-studded occasions in which to show off wearable works of art, while rubbing elbows with designers, celebrities, stylists, socialites and those who love a great time. Ninety locals took a leap of faith last weekend, in an adrenaline-rushing demonstration of their commitment to improve the lives of Miami children and families, by literally going “Over the Edge” – to rappel 19 stories (200 meters) down the side of the JW Marriott Marquis building on Biscayne Boulevard Way.  The second-annual event raised $115,000 for the  Miami Children’s Initiative, a nonprofit organization developed to  improve Liberty City by investing in every child. Participants included local community, civic and business leaders, elected officials, celebrities, philanthropists, and members of the general public. 

The organization’s signature “Over the Edge” fundraiser, which is unique to South Florida, featured a new twist this year.  Read the rest of this entry »

Ciroc Launch Event at the Dream Hotel 

In addition to a great vibe, a beautiful rooftop sunset, and a cast of some of Miami  notables, there was plenty to celebrate at the CIROC Amaretto Launch event with OK Magazine held at the Dream South Beach Tuesday night.  The event was hosted by Jason Derulo, with sounds by DJ Michelle Pooch, (yes, the philanthropist and socialite is a DJ too!) on the heels of Derulo’s single release “Marry Me”.  To show her support of her soon to be fiancé and the song that was a tribute to her, Grammy nominated American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks also made a guest appearance at the event.  Others in attendance to welcome the newest member of the CIROC family included world acclaimed artist Domingo Zapato, NFL Star Jeremy Shockey, DJ Laz, Mack (Y100), Adam Kuperstein (NBC6) and Chef Richard Ingraham and Johanna Gomez (Channel 10). Nick D’Annunzio’s Luau Birthday Bash 

Few, if any, events during the month of August in Miami elicit the palpable excitement of Nick D’Annunzio’s annual birthday bash, which turns the average sweltering/humid summer night into one of fever-pitch fun. 

This year was no exception.   Co-principal of Miami Beach-based PR agency TARA, Ink., D’Annunzio celebrated his birthday with a PanAm-era luau benefiting Make-A-Wish Southern Florida on Saturday, August 10, at OCHO- the hip and very private upstairs poolside bar on the eighth floor of Soho Beach House. The oceanfront deck of OCHO was transformed to resemble 1960s Hawaii as guests, who had been “leied” upon arrival-not a bad way to start- sipped on spiked Coconut Cartel coconuts- out of actual coconuts, and Reyka Vodka and noshed on “Hawaiian” tacos and chips and guac.  More than 500 guests, all dressed in-theme enjoyed entertainment by a hula dancer, who moved her hips expertly to DJ Dutch’s island-disco grooves, while Elvis’ Blue Hawaii was projected on the wall of a nearby building.  For those made sleepy by the summer heat, natural Hawaiian ginger energy shots by KLEAN33 gave them the necessary boost to party on.  D’Annunzio was surprised with  a luscious, custom-made mango sheet cake by Cecconi’s. Nary a deluge nor flood could keep the fashion forward from the tents at the Raleigh hotel for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim (MBFWS) shows.  Arguably the best week of the summer, MBFWS brought five days of designer runway shows, presentations and parties to Miami Beach from July 18 through July 22.  The palpable excitement of the eager crowd could be felt throughout the Raleigh on Thursday, July 18, as models, designers, journalists, stylists and chefs posed and mingled beneath umbrellas for the kick-off party that took place poolside and featured a Roxy PopSurf Runway Show. Nearby, on the covered terrace, the delightful, Mercedes-Benz Presents designer Mara Hoffman, showed off the most coveted item of the week- a colorful, striking E-Cabriolet convertible, which Mercedes-Benz wrapped in a new print from Hoffman’s 2014 resort collection.  Hoffman and guests, including model, Chrissy Teigen, posed in front of the car throughout the evening-many longing to hop in and go for a spin.  The party went on past its official end time- with lots of excited chatter and a crowd who refused to let a little (or a LOT) of rain dampen their moods, and set the tone for one of the best weekends of the year.  Read the rest of this entry »
