Art Basel Dazzle- Part 2

So here it is- part two of the great, the better and the even better of Art Basel, the one week love-fest that celebrates the social side of art.  And what better side is there, after all? 

Interview and Ferrari Party 

Interview magazines Peter M. Brant and Sotheby’s Tobias Meyer, took over the cutting edge parking garage at 1111 Lincoln Road, bathing it in red light, in honor of Ferrari’s Chairman, Luca di Montezemolo, for one of the hottest parties of Basel week on Tuesday, November 29.  Ferrari filled 6 floors of the garage, with rare vintage and concept cars, including the new Ferrari 458 Spider which was unveiled at the party, as was the 3D film by Marco Brambilia, RPM.

Hundreds of A-listers, from around the globe donned Ferrari-red Pashminas which they received upon arrival to the party for protection against the chilly weather.  Le Basque catering provided signature bites while guests admired the cars and danced to music spun by Solange Knowles. Late in the evening, R&B star Janelle Monae, wearing her signature tuxedo and bouffant hair-do, gave a surprise performance onstage with her band.

Maybach, MOCA, Soulwax

Another “golden ticket” was Jeffrey Deitch’s and LA MOCA’s Beach Party at the Raleigh, on Wednesday, November 30 which featured a DJ set by 2MANYDJS and a performance by Soulwax, the Belgian electro-rock band, that got everyone dancing in the sand. The party was sponsored by Maybach, XOJET and Grey Goose vodka- a perfect trio for any bash.  We were excited to spy Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones having dinner at a corner table with Pat Reilly.

 

Patrick Mcmullan Hosts Party for Tatijana Shoan’s As If Magazine

On Thursday, December 1, AS IF Magazine feted its premiere issue with a private cocktail reception hosted by famed photographer Patrick McMullan, along with photographer & Editor-and-Chief Tatijana Shoan and Vice President/ Publisher Scott Fishkind at the swank FENDI Casa Luxury Living Showroom. Attendees included fashion designer Corey Lynn Calter, Scott Fellows & Craig Bassam of the Bassam Fellows, DJ Coleman, musician/producer Aleks De Carvalho and legendary writer Anthony Haden-Guest.  An art exhibit by celebrated fashion illustrator Bil Donovan brought the magazine’s pages to life through mixed-media art using Shoan’s photographs of fashion muse Michelle Violy Harper as his canvas. Images from the featured editorial of Patrick McMullan were also on display along with exclusive t-shirts designed by Anthony Haden-Guest as described in his interview for AS IF.

Refinery 29

Also on December 1, website, Refinery29, launched its Miami edition with an exhibition from Not a Gallery artist Justin Belmont, who created an Andy Warhol-inspired art garden, a new series of work developed specifically for Refinery29 entitled “Factory Fun House.” The installation featured 10 large-scale circular art pieces throughout Cafeina’s gorgeous, lush landscaped courtyard. On-hand for the party were:  Senior Editor Kristian Laliberte, Miami Editor Nikki Novo and Creative Director Piera Gelardi, DJ May Kwok, Founder of Not a Gallery, Justin Belmont, DJ Chelsea Leyland, Designer and Founder of Miansa Jewelry, Michael Saiger, President of Del Toro Shoes, Matthew Chevallard and fashion journalist Johnny Misheff, Anna Plaks and Ric Pipino.

Michael Capponi and Miami Magazine Present Haiti Art Expo

Showcasing an altruistic side of Art Basel was Haiti Art Expo 2011, produced by Michael Capponi, Jeff Feldman and Rachel Moscoso Denis, which took place from December 1-4 in the heart of the Miami Design District, attracting thousands to its collection of fine arts, objects d’art and photography — all for the cause of boosting progress for Haiti’s people. The four-night extravaganza was presented by Miami Magazine and sponsored by Marquis Vodka, Ludus Athletics and Capponi Construction Group with art curated by Michele Frisch of Galerie Marassa in Haiti.

Haiti Empowerment Mission hosted the expo’s opening night on December 1, with two honorary hosts representing the administration of Haiti’s President Michel Martelly: Minister of Tourism Stephanie Balmir Villedrouin, Secretary of State Elsa Baussan Noel and special guest Sheldon T. Anderson. The party on December 2, benefited Hand in Hand for Haiti a school-building project created by the travel retail industry with support from Miami-based Onboard Media and its sister company, Starboard Cruise Services. The gala evening attracted such celebrities as actor Val Kilmer and artists Philippe Dodard and Manuel Mathieu. Also on display were original handprints created by Harrison Ford, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Jay Leno and other stars. They are being auctioned through Dec. 17 at http://haitiartexpo2011.kintera.org.  On Saturday, December 3, Hard Hats for Haiti and Pan American Development Foundation welcomed Haiti government officials, local personalities and a throng of art lovers. The evening’s highlight was the unveiling of “Haiti: Hope in Progress,” a limited-edition series of images shot in Haiti by photographer/artist Jordan Michael Zuniga.
