Miami Unites for Children at Amigos Night

Posted by Mary Jo Almeida-Shore On November - 8 - 2024

On Saturday, November 2, Amigos For Kids turned up the Miami magic with their blockbuster annual fundraiser, Amigos Night, at The Hangar in Regatta Harbor. The soirée exceeded its fundraising goals, drawing Miami’s glitterati, including celebs, media darlings, politicos, and power players, all rallying behind a critical cause: preventing child abuse and neglect.

Karina Pavone, Amigos For Kids’ President and CEO, summed up the night’s vibe perfectly: “We are overwhelmed by the support shown at Amigos Night. Thanks to our generous community, we can continue empowering families and strengthening our communities through transformative programs.”

The evening was a feast of Miami’s culinary A-listers who served up mouthwatering bites alongside an open bar stocked with Bacardi’s finest concoctions. Add a black carpet packed with star power—Gabriel Coronel, Gloria Ordaz, and Pamela Silva, to name a few—and you’ve got a recipe for a night to remember.

The Clique had the crowd on their feet all night, capped off by a buzzing Hora Loca. Meanwhile, “Domino Park” brought a touch of Miami’s soul, with enthusiasts battling it out for bragging rights.

But Amigos Night was more than a party with a purpose. As Maggie Fresen Zulueta, Chair of Amigos For Kids’ Board, put it: “This event is a testament to our community’s dedication to making a difference.” And make a difference they did. The night raised crucial funds to sustain programs that provide after-school enrichment and family support services.

Big props to the MVPs of the evening—presenting sponsor Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, and heavy hitters like Bacardi, Academica, and Prestige Clinical Research. Shoutouts also go to Greenberg Traurig, Ford, Goya, and Ryder for stepping up in a big way.

Harbour Club Miami: a New Era of Elegance and Indulgence

The Harbour Club’s grand opening wasn’t just an event; it was the event, a feast that put “decadent” to shame. Miami’s swankiest and sparkliest slipped into Sunset Harbour to christen this posh new playground for global glitterati, where caviar flowed, truffle grated, and sushi pirouetted its way across marble platters. From two cheese wheels brimming with risotto and pasta (hello, truffle blizzard!) to sliders and tartare that’d make any gourmand weak at the knees, it was a culinary carnival with more bites than a foodie’s fever dream. Everything circulated at a perfect pace, a dance of flavors and textures, each bite more irresistible than the last.

Live music was the evening’s heartbeat: a violinist, saxophonist and a crew of vocalists dazzled the crowd, setting a scene straight out of a Bond movie. Meanwhile, over in the Speakeasy, a DJ spun everyone’s favorites, and suddenly, “one more drink” turned into “just one more dance.” The cocktails weren’t just poured-they were conjured. Four signature creations incorporated top-shelf elixirs (think 1942), had guests raising their glasses; each drink an invitation to linger a little longer and savor the magic of the night.

Now, let’s talk spaces. The Harbour Club, brainchild of hospitality luminary James Julius, blends old-school London charm with Miami’s sultry edge. At the forefront, a’Riva, the Italian Mediterranean restaurant, which is open to the public by reservation only, offers seasonal Italian favorites such as  Meatballs Angelina, passed down from Julius’ family, parmesan, and Eggplant Milanese with feta and a Caesar salad so good it should be illegal. It’s refined yet unpretentious, with al fresco seating, lush greenery, and a sleek bar, a’Riva evokes effortless glamour and coastal charm.

Beyond a’Riva, members slip into the Palm Room, a sultry lounge hidden behind walls adorned with bespoke palm prints, a space that’s mysterious, dimly-lit and energetic, complete with a secret entrance. This sultry, intimate oasis combines the charm of a tropical hideaway with the sophistication of a private club. The cocktail menu offers a curated selection of drinks and light bites.

Upstairs, Nikai at Harbour Club is where things get exclusive, a Japanese haven where wagyu, toro toasts, and fresh fish flown in from Japan elevate each bite. Signature dishes include Wagyu and truffle crispy rice, wasabi Caesar salad with house-made nori chips, toro toasts, and an extensive selection of wine, sake, and Japanese whiskey.

Design-wise, every corner is a scene-stealer. YODEZEEN transformed the Harbour Club into a feast for the eyes, weaving British opulence with Miami cool. Soft whites and sandy tones ground a’Riva’s beachy vibe, while the Palm Room goes bold with dark walnut, deep green velvet, and touches of gold. Upstairs at Nikai, vibrant reds and blues dance under custom lighting, making the whole room feel like a high-energy gallery. Even the bathrooms are dressed to impress, featuring custom wallpaper and rare marble- making a bathroom selfie irresistible.

Harbour Club’s membership is as exclusive as they come, with Classic, Under 30, and Lifetime options that grant access to not only the clubs but also to a full calendar of ultra-luxe events. Think intimate chef dinners, wellness workshops, and pop-up dining experiences—all perfectly tailored for those who like their social scenes with a side of exclusivity.

So, here’s the scoop: Harbour Club isn’t just another hotspot. It’s a private paradise where the scene-makers and tastemakers come to revel, network, and indulge. And if the grand opening is any hint, Miami’s got a new star, and it’s a showstopper.

Maíz y Agave: a Flavorful Journey into the Heart of Oaxaca

Posted by Mary Jo Almeida-Shore On September - 3 - 2024

Miami’s culinary scene just got even more vibrant with the arrival of Maíz y Agave, a lively tribute to Oaxaca, Mexico, where every dish and drink feels like a love letter to this rich and storied region.

Located in the heart of Coral Gables, Maíz y Agave invites you to dive deep into the essence of Mexico by artfully blending ancient Oaxacan traditions with a modern twist. The venue is a feast for the eyes, adorned with intricate Mexican artwork and craftsmanship that create an enchanting atmosphere, urging guests to immerse themselves in Oaxaca’s rich heritage.

A Culinary Expedition Across Three Floors

Imagine this: three distinct floors, each offering a unique culinary journey through Mexico. On the ground floor, El Patio’s vibrant décor and menu is filled with Oaxacan delights. From the tableside-prepared Guacamole Mexicano en Molcajete to the daring Tostada Vicosa pero Sabrosa with chapulines, each bite tells a story. But the stars of the show? The Mole Negro, Cochinita Pibil, and the traditional Tlayudas—each dish a testament to the richness of Oaxacan cuisine.

The Matsur Bar, also on the first floor, serves up cocktails that are as playful as they are potent. Sip on the Tacon De Madre or the cheekily named Pito Loco, and let the mezcal flavors elevate your night. The frozen mojitos—customizable with your liquor of choice—are a must-try. This isn’t just a bar; it’s the opening act to your culinary adventure.

Ascend to the second floor, and you’ll find Los Balcones, where the dining experience reaches new heights. Here, salsa is theatrically prepared table-side, and you might even be asked to lend a hand.

The menu is a symphony of traditional Oaxacan flavors, with Chef Christian Moreno, a proud Oaxacan native, presenting his top picks: Caldo de Piedra, Almond Mole with Duck, and the exquisite Lobster Tail in Oaxacan sauce. The steaks are exceptional, and you absolutely cannot miss the Aguachile de Ribeye Wagyu. It’s haute cuisine with heart, nestled in an elegant setting that promises an unforgettable evening.

La Azotea, the rooftop bar l, boasts an energy as high as the views. As the sun sets over Miami, unwind with a handcrafted cocktail or a premium mezcal, and let the stunning panoramas take your breath away. A DJ spins dance music and throwback hits from the ’90s (think Bash’s back patio circa 1998), perfect for singing along and dancing with friends, old and new. La Azotea is exactly the kind of place Coral Gables has been missing—offering a lively happy hour and an energetic late-night vibe (open until 1:00 am on weekends).

A Story in Every Corner

Every nook of Maíz y Agave tells a tale. From the handmade plates crafted by Oaxacan artisans to the traditional crafts that support over 100 families, this restaurant is a proud tribute to the culture of Oaxaca. Live Mariachi music three nights a week adds to the festive atmosphere, while signature cocktails and Oaxacan coffee selections tantalize the taste buds. For those with a sweet tooth, homemade Oaxacan chocolates and ice cream are the ultimate indulgence.

As I sipped my mezcal and watched the world from La Azotea, I felt a profound connection to the stories, flavors, and spirit of Oaxaca that Maíz y Agave brings to life so beautifully. Whether you choose El Patio, Los Balcones, or La Azotea, be prepared for an authentic Oaxacan experience that will linger long after the last bite.
